Trump’s Tariff War Ignites: Europe Strikes Back with Boycotts
The Beginning of Trump's Tariff War! Two European Countries Organizing a Counterattack Against the U.S.
The United States is set to launch a tariff offensive against products from Canada, China, and Europe. In response, an increasing number of people are calling for a boycott of American products, according to the French media outlet Capital.
The first U.S. brand to feel the impact is Tesla. Sales of Tesla vehicles in Europe have plummeted. However, this decline is attributed more to Elon Musk’s controversial "Nazi salute" incident than to Trump's tariff announcement.
On the internet, European consumers are sharing lists of American brands to boycott, including Coca-Cola, Kraft, Walmart, KFC, McDonald's, and Starbucks.
However, a deeper look into the boycott movement reveals a complex dynamic. While these brands are American, many of their products are manufactured in France and other parts of Europe. Consequently, the boycott could backfire by negatively affecting employment within Europe.
Despite these challenges, some countries have begun using economic means to fight back against what they see as U.S. economic bullying. Norway has announced that it will no longer supply fuel to U.S. Navy ships. Håltbakk Bunkers, the country’s largest port operator, made this announcement on Facebook on the 1st of this month.
The company explained that it made this decision following the "unprecedented chaos" resulting from a confrontation between Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House.
While the public has welcomed this move, Norway’s Ministry of Defense expressed its discomfort. Norwegian Defense Minister Tore Sandvik stated that this was purely a company decision and not reflective of government policy. He further clarified that Norway would continue to provide the necessary supplies and support to the U.S. military.
Meanwhile, signs of a similar boycott movement are emerging in neighboring Sweden. Leading the movement through a Facebook group, Hube Andersen criticized the U.S., stating, "Buying American products in this era is like supporting Russia’s invasion."
Within the group, people are expressing hopes that U.S. stocks will plummet.
As Trump's tariff war begins, will the aggressive countermeasures of European citizens be enough to make him flinch?
