A Trump administration official sparked controversy last week by advising TV viewers to buy Tesla stock, an act that violates laws prohibiting federal employees from using their public office for personal gain or endorsing specific products.
Despite this breach, it remains unclear whether appropriate actions will be taken in response.
The remarks were made by Howard Rutnik, the U.S. Secretary of Commerce, just a week after President Trump turned the White House lawn into a promotional platform for Elon Musk’s Tesla cars.
Typically, when a public official endorses a product, an investigation is triggered by the government's top ethics lawyer. However, President Trump had previously dismissed key ethics officials, including the one responsible for such inquiries.
Meanwhile, Tesla's stock, which had plummeted dramatically, is now on the rise again. Despite disappointing sales figures in Europe for February, the stock has maintained a consecutive streak of increases.
Tesla’s Struggling Sales in Europe Amid Growing EV Demand
On March 25th (local time), the European Automobile Manufacturers Association released its car sales figures. Tesla sold 168,800 vehicles in Europe, reflecting a 40% year-over-year decline. This represents a slight improvement compared to the 45% drop in January. However, in the first two months of this year, Tesla’s European sales fell by approximately 43%, totaling around 27,000 vehicles.
In contrast, the overall electric vehicle sales in Europe rose by 31% year-on-year, highlighting the increasing demand for electric vehicles in the region. As a result, Tesla's waning presence in the European market seems to be deepening, with growing discontent surrounding the brand.
